It is not sufficient to simply put competent people together to get an efficient team. Work teams are at the crossroads of individual experiences and personal backgrounds of different kinds. They are the crossroads of culture, values, languages, sensitivity and diverse aspirations. More than in any other place, it is here that communication is necessary inasmuch as the team members are rarely chosen by themselves. But they still have to work together. Very often, they will need each other. At times they will disagree. Furthermore, in the competitive field of the working world it is all too likely that they will find themselves competing with one another. The team is therefore a site of potential frustration, fear and misunderstanding. This is why the team should look after itself. Team Building is a formula for seminars dedicated to teams, whether they have just started working together, have just received a new member or have been together for some time. The objective of Team Building is to take a break in the daily professional work and reflect on the organisation of the work, how each member experiences his/her relationships with the other members of the team, and on their expectations regarding each other. Thanks to the presence of an external figure, who acts as both mediator and consultant, it is an opportunity to communicate. Team Building might be in response to a critical situation, optimal prevention for problems or simply be the optimisation of the team’s human resources. It usually takes place outdoors, i.e. away from the usual work place, somewhere quiet that makes it easier to take a distance and get to know the other team members better, at times, more personally. Team Building is a generator of well-being in one’s work place, motivation as well as optimisation of human resources in organisations.The team is a group that is focussing on a task. In Animation non directive des groupes, Michel Lobrot writes: "One must observe that such groups do not exist if they do not concentrate, at one moment or another, on themselves and on their members. Indeed, even if they are united to fulfil this task (or because they were told to) and not to experience communication, they have to compare their intentions, projects and objectives at one moment or another. If they are to achieve the minimal unity required to be effective, this is indispensable. Of course, this does not mean that they all have to concentrate on the personal life and feelings of all the others, or on all their interpersonal communication, but rather that they should at least concentrate on the objectives, projects, means and work relations, since they are interiorised and experienced by each and everyone. It is a matter of focussing on the subjectivity that excludes simply concentrating on objects and contents." This passage could be an excellent explanation for the use of team building. The role of the conductor is important. He has to be familiar with the environment the team is working in, first meet each of the members individually, be both an excellent mediator and outstanding conductor. Finally, he has to be a keen observer to be able to understand the mainsprings that are influencing the functions and dysfunctions of the team.
